THE PROBLEM

Most NFPs get the reporting wrong.

01

The AIS is rushed.

Volunteer treasurer realises in November the AIS is due 31 December. Two months of frantic email chains, a generalist accountant doing it for the first time, and figures that don't tie back to anything. Risk of revocation if it happens twice.

02

The wrong tier is applied.

Small charities preparing full GPFS they don't need. Medium charities skipping the review they do need. Large charities trying to file without an audit. Every tier has its own rules and most generalists guess.

03

The audit firm bounces it back.

Working papers thin. Reconciliations missing. Income recognition wrong on restricted grants. The auditor sends a list of management adjustments and the board chair has to call an extra meeting.

We sort all three. Right tier, right format, right time.

FIND YOUR TIER

ACNC categorises charities by size — your obligations follow.

Confirm your tier before anything else. Wrong tier = wrong format = bounced back.

Tier 3

Small charity

Under $500,000 annual revenue

  • AIS only required — financials optional
  • Special Purpose Financial Statements (SPFS) usually fine
  • No audit or review required by ACNC
  • State law / grant funders may still require one
  • Lodgement-only support, board-ready summary
Tier 2

Medium charity

$500,000 – $3 million annual revenue

  • AIS + financial statements required
  • SPFS or GPFS-Simplified Disclosures
  • Review engagement minimum (or full audit)
  • Auditor liaison & working papers prepared
  • Reserves & restricted-fund disclosures
Tier 1

Large charity

$3 million+ annual revenue

  • AIS + full financial statements required
  • General Purpose Financial Statements (GPFS or GPFS-SD)
  • Full audit required
  • Related-party disclosures & segment reporting
  • Full audit working papers & auditor liaison
WHAT YOU GET

End-to-end reporting — not just a spreadsheet handover.

We coordinate the prep, draft the statements, liaise with the auditor and lodge the AIS. Your treasurer takes a board-ready pack to the AGM.

Tier confirmation & framework

We confirm your ACNC size, the right financial reporting framework (SPFS vs GPFS-SD vs GPFS), and the audit / review obligation before any work starts.

Trial balance & reconciliations

Bank reconciliations, intercompany clearances, GST reconciliation, payroll clearing — all tied off before financials are drafted.

Financial statements drafted

Statement of comprehensive income, statement of financial position, changes in equity, cashflow, notes & declarations. ACNC-compliant, board-ready.

Restricted & unrestricted funds disclosure

Grant income recognition done correctly, restricted balances tracked, unspent funds carried forward properly. Funders read these — they have to be right.

Auditor / reviewer liaison

We brief the auditor, pack the working papers, answer queries during fieldwork and turn around management adjustments fast. Your treasurer doesn't field the calls.

AIS preparation & lodgement

Activities, beneficiaries, financial data, responsible persons all kept current. Lodged through the ACNC Charity Portal on time.

Board-ready summary pack

Plain-English summary of the financials, key ratios, reserves position, restricted-fund commentary. The treasurer presents it. No translation needed.

Year-on-year & ratio analysis

Where you've grown, where you've contracted, where the reserves sit, what's at risk. We don't just lodge numbers — we tell the board what they mean.

FAQ

What boards ask before they engage us.

When is the AIS actually due?

Six months after the end of your financial year. Most Australian charities run a 30 June year-end, so the AIS is due 31 December. Some charities use a different year-end (e.g. December) and that shifts the AIS deadline accordingly.

We're behind on lodgement. What's the risk?

One late AIS goes on your public ACNC record but isn't fatal. Two consecutive late or missing AIS submissions and the ACNC can revoke your registration — at which point you lose your tax concessions (TCC, ITEC, GST concessions, DGR, FBT cap). We can usually catch a behind charity up inside two weeks.

SPFS vs GPFS — what's the difference?

Special Purpose Financial Statements (SPFS) follow only the accounting standards your charity chooses to apply. General Purpose Financial Statements (GPFS) follow full Australian Accounting Standards. SPFS is simpler and cheaper to prepare, but only available where there are no external users beyond members and the ACNC. We confirm which applies before drafting.

Do you do the audit yourselves?

No — we're tax agents and accountants, not auditors. We prepare the financial statements and working papers, and we liaise with your audit firm. If you don't already have an auditor we can introduce you to firms we work with regularly.

What if our books are in a mess?

Common situation, especially with volunteer treasurers and turnover on the board. We do a clean-up engagement first — bank recs, GST recs, payroll, restricted-fund splits — then build the financials on a tidy trial balance. Quoted up front, fixed fee.

Do you cover NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA?

Yes. Our office is in Norwest NSW but we work cloud-native with charities and incorporated associations in every state. State-specific incorporated association returns (NSW Fair Trading, CAV VIC, OFT QLD, ConsumerProtection WA, CBS SA) are part of our standard scope.
